Putting Yourself In The Frame

Although photography can be a testing job, there is no doubt that too many people forget that life is not always easy for those on the other side of the camera. The life of a model is assumed by many to include nothing more taxing than flying to beautiful locations to be waited on hand and foot and told how wonderful you are, but for most models this is far from the truth.

The clients of a modelling agency are paying a lot of money for a set, a photographer and for the publicity, so they want to be absolutely certain they get what they want. This can mean that a model spends much of their time sitting in uncomfortable clothing in unflattering poses and trying to look as though they are enjoying themselves.

A supermodel, of course, will have their every whim catered to for fear of offending them and losing the cachet of having them as the face of a campaign. For a new model, however, there can’t be too much opportunity to be fussy, and they will have to spend lots of time waiting around, being barked at by set designers and creative directors and trying to evoke an emotion they aren’t feeling.

The most successful models will be in their position because they know how to give the photographer exactly what he or she is looking for. This is not something that comes easily or naturally to a lot of people, and if a photographer finds a model who is easy to work with they should do their best to help that model be successful.
